Gregory, 55, passed away from cancer and went to be with The Lord on Sunday, March 26, 2023. He is only preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Odell and Clara (Jones) Shavers, and maternal grandparents Joseph and Bertha (Logan) Glover.
Gregory was the oldest and first-born twin of parents James and Joe Ann (Glover) Shavers. He and his twin Barrett grew up in Monroeville, PA with their younger sister Cynthia. The twins were known throughout Monroeville and surrounding areas, had tons of friends and enjoyed the special twin bond all their lives.
A few years after graduating from Gateway Senior High School, Gregory moved out to Los Angeles, CA to be with his mother and sister for nine months, but was soon back in Monroeville to be closer to his brother. Most of his life, Gregory worked in the restaurant business with his brother. Sometimes they worked together, other times apart. But both of them worked in various restaurants for more than 35 years in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan.
In 1997, Gregory met his soulmate and fiancé, Cindy Portis. They were planning a surprise wedding for April 15, 2023, but God had other plans. In life, Gregory still filled the role of a loving father to Cindy’s three children: Terrence “Smoke” Portis (deceased) and his daughter Amerikajah “Kajah,” Troy “Bink” and Dana (Colacarro) Portis and sons Jacob Terrence and Carter Joseph and Tasha “Pie” Portis. In 2010, Gregory also filled the role of a loving uncle to Na’Riyah “Rye Rye” Portis, who affectionately called Gregory “Unc.”
In recent years, Gregory worked as lead assembly worker for Little Tikes and Rubbermaid. In 2021 he became ill and shortly thereafter was diagnosed with cancer.
Gregory has always been known for his sense of humor and the ability to make people laugh no matter the circumstance. He also had a huge heart and was able to show compassion and understanding to everyone. He will be remembered for this and more, including all the private memories he created with family and friends.
