Gwendolyne Bernita Norment, affectionally known as Gwen, was born on March 01,1951 in Memphis, TN to the loving parents of David C, and Ida L. Norment. After a long & mighty battle, God called her home on June 22, 2024 @ 5am. At the tender age of 2, Gwen, her big brother David, Ma & Daddy moved to Akron, Ohio, where she remained a lifetime resident. Gwen attended Akron Public Schools and graduated with high honors from South High School Class of 1968, at the age of 17. Gwen loved all things pertaining to school, from receiving various top academic achievement awards, being involved in many organizations, to being with her friends. One of her most honorable achievements while attending high school was becoming Head Majorette both her Junior & Senior years. She could hi-kick you right off the football field, all while swirling her baton!
As a young lady, Gwen also fell in love with the sport of bowling, earning hundreds of awards & traveling across the US. In her 50 plus years of bowling, rolling an "almost" perfect game of 298 several times over. She was so close to achieving perfection! Anyone who knew her, knew they could find her at all the bowling alleys throughout Akron & surrounding cities and states, just about everyday of the week. Her hard work and dedication to the sport paid off. Not only was she a proud member of the Rubber City Travelers of Akron, Ohio for over 40 years, she was also voted as a Lifetime Member of the National Travelers Bowling League, where she was voted as a Chair Member. Gwen passed on her love and talents of the sport to all three of her children. Daughters Jacquie & Angel became members of the Akron Junior Travelers Bowling League. Gwen was employed by DuPont as a Lab Technician for many years until her health started to decline.
Gwen loved her family. She would love to talk and talk and talk about her daughters, son, grandchildren, and as of late her great-granddaughter. She would love to cook her "famous" spaghetti, with green peppers & fancy cheese on top. She always made it look like it should be a meal on display at any Italian restaurant. As we used to say as kids, "Mommy, you put your foot in this spaghetti". But did we really want her foot in our dinner? LOL
Gwen also loved watching sports, especially all things OHIO. She shared to love of THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY and Cleveland Browns football with her eldest daughter Jacquie, or Toni-Bone as she would call her. She shared the Cleveland Guardians with her one & only son Patrick, Lee or Le'Aire as she would call him. Her baby girl Angel, or Stuffy as she called her, didn't quite pick up the love of sports, but her and Gwen's granddaughter Dy shared their TV shows. Watching TV with Gwen became a favorite with all of her "babies", as she would call them. Her laughter, witty sense of humor, knowledge of history, love for music and tell-it like it is and how she felt stubborn attitude will be immensely missed by us all.
