Maurice Farr, Sr. aka “Reese Cup”, age 78, went to be with the Lord on August 11, 2023.
Maurice was born on May 9, 1945, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Dorothy Ray. After
graduating from Stephen Lee High School in 1963, he went on to play football at Livingstone
College. After leaving college, he joined the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany
for four years before returning to marry his high school sweetheart, Mary Patricia Young, and
settling in Akron, Ohio. He later took night classes to graduate from The University of Akron
with a BA in Business. In 1982, he was Honorably Discharged from the Army National Guard of
Ohio, and the Reserve of the United States Army.
Maurice enjoyed a successful 28-year career at B.F. Goodrich, where he was able to travel
extensively around the world. He also worked for Cleveland Pneumatic, Riser Foods Inc.,
Giant Eagle, and Western Southern before retiring. He was a faithful member of Mt. Haven
Missionary Baptist Church.
He was Past Master of the Phoenix Lodge #112, Bezaleel Consistory #15, and Al Kaf Temple
#109, where he served as two- time (96’, 2005’) Illustrious Potentate.
Maurice had a passion for sports. He was a dedicated member of the West Akron Pee Wee
Association, coaching his four boys and countless others. He was an enthusiastic bowler, and
belonged to the Goodtimers Mixed Bowling League, where he held the offices of President
and Treasurer. He played on the Helping Hand Social Club softball team and coached the
women’s softball squad. He was a huge Dallas Cowboys fan.
Maurice was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Mary Patricia Farr; mother,
Dorothy Ray, grandmother, Janey Ray, and brother, Franklin Farr.
He leaves to cherish in his memory his four sons, Maurice (LaVita) Farr, Jr., twins Marques
Farr and Marcus (Natalie) Farr, and Marvin (Fazhion) Farr; grandchildren, Justin, Makayla,
Maurice "Xavier", Jasmine, Kierra, Marvin Jr., G'aeda Brinson, AJ, Michael and Micalah Brown;
brothers, JayVan (Leslie) Farr and JV. Farr; sisters, Taohoseen Williams and Dorothy Theresa
Farr; brother-in-law, Marvin (Brenda) Young, and Ken Young; sister-in-law, Gloria (Kenneth)
Larry; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
Services will be held Friday, August 18, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Ashworth Temple COGIC, 1086
V. Odom Blvd., Akron, OH 44307, with Pastor Derwood Lockett officiating. Interment at Ohio
Western Reserve Cemetery. Friends may visit the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of
service. Condolences may be sent to 1040 Ellsworth Dr., Akron, OH 44313.
